I Finally Smoked Salvia Divinorum, Again.

salvia plantsTwo nights ago I decided to smoke the rest of my 5x Salvia Divinorum leaves. I’ve been hanging on to the remains of this gram for 5 years! I am quite particular about using any psychedelic substances (some might say obsessively careful and extra safe) so it was a long time in coming!

It came about after reading Dan Carpenters book “A Psychonauts Guide to the Invisible Landscape,” and doing with some general research into drugs like DXM and Salvia (both legal). Now I find myself really interested in having a psychedelic adventure again.

This Salvia was so old I wasn’t even sure if it would do the trick anymore. However, I prepared for the possiblity of it being really strong after reading experience reports on Erowid. Here were stories of people smoking just two hits of the 5x Salvia Divinorum - not 10x or 20x but only 5x- and having full-blown psychedelic experiences!

In the end, for me, it wasn’t anything near full-blown but just a small, small, small taste…

I sprinkled some Salvia over a little bit of Calea Z, and then took it all in one bong hit and immediately laid down on the carpet.

Almost simultaneously I began to feel that Salvia-sensation over my body; it’s hard to describe, but it’s like a metallic or rusty taste over my body. I’ve had this same sensation everytime I smoke Salvia, and it always occurs nearly immediately upon exhalation. It’s not an uncomfortable feeling, despite the description. (It’s amazing that something can work this fast on the body - makes me think of DMT.)

But…

Nothing really seemed to happen though.

So I took another bong hit, and then two more after that.

I wanted something big, something mindblowing!!

But this Salvia was just too old.

I certainly felt different and even had some whisps of visuals. With my eyes open, there was a shield of color coming over things, and with eyes closed, there was some spotted lights moving around. But this was really nothing dramatic and you’d feel more “out there” by just getting really, really high, actually….

But it gave me a taste for more, and not only that, but confidence to go further.

Five or six years ago I was in my drug-exploration prime. Since those times, I rarely get a chance to indulge in such things. Much of it’s been related to living in tiny or otherwise uncomfortable apartments and having no suitable setting for a psychedelic experience.

I’ve just moved into a much larger and more comfortable condo and I’m going to use this to my advantage to explore what’s possible with Salvia Divinorum.

I am especially intrigued with it’s purported ability to induce what is described as Out of Body Experiences. On that note I’ll be buying some from I-Am-Shaman here in a few weeks.

I would also love to hear about your experiences with Salvia, especially if they are particular in depth or involve out of body experiences. You can email me (consciousdreaming at gmail dot com) or leave a comment describing your story, which will also allow me to contact you privately. I am interested in publishing other peoples Salvia stories.

  1. I have smoked 20x and it knocks me on my ass. I think I will have to buy some more for those sleepless nights. I am a two hit wonder though. I can buy it 3 blocks away. Funny how it costs about the same as weed, it is just legal.
No psychedelic experiences as of yet. I just pass out, same as with pot and opium.

  2. Have you thought about going with a lower-dosage? Maybe you’d have a better experience than just passing out! But that’s what happens for you with weed and opium, too?? Very strange…!

  3. I have had two very different experiences on Salvia- I think it does depend not just on the strength, but also on your intention. The first time I tried it I was far too blasé- I thought I had had enough DMT to be able to handle just about anything but I was very wrong! I forgot that I had taken anything, the experience was so strong I forgot who I was, I was in a rocky field with a chain link fence, it wasn’t not particularly visual, the strongest impressions were emotions. I felt like I was a child again, I would talk to people and try to figure out what was going on but I came across as scared and needy and the more I tried to act independently the needier I seemed. I also felt I kept ‘turning back’ into the situation and could not escape. Towards the end of the trip I had almost resigned myself to being unable to communicate with others for the rest of my life, perhaps how I would feel if I was paralyzed and completely dependent. On the bright side it certainly woke me up to some issues I may have about vulnerability! LOL. The second time I was certainly taking Salvia seriously, I was also perhaps too eager for an answer and some guidance. I once again had a very strong experience with entities appearing and interacting with me immediately after my second bong- but this time there was no strong emotions and no message. I have a theory that if you have expectations of Salvia it will not fulfill them. In that way I think it is a powerful teacher- teaching you to truly let go of your ego. I wonder what will happen if next time I approach Salvia with an open mind and no expectations…

  4. I’ve smoked it a few times, 10x extract, and always with an intense experience. The issue with me is that each time I was supposed to be alone, but there would be others around me in the “vision” and this would give me a sense of panic that now everyone knows.

It seems that there is a consistent way that I’m affected. Always the sense of others around. Always the sense that I need to be doing something - complete the project or whatever, before I can get back. And in recent trips I’ve noticed that there is some music that accompanies the experience - as if it is part of that world. The music is almost like a children’s show jingle, and in fact the first experience involved the sense that teletubby-like beings were gathering and pulling me along. In another trip there was the distinct awareness of a cartoon-like dad and mom among the beings. They were “flying” over me and creating/dismantling a slatted dome structure over me. The weird part about each experience is that at the time it all seems perfectly natural and logical, familiar, and real.

Sounds a bit like a dream, eh? :)

  6. That is exactly my theory! That it turns on some dream process and only slightly impairs you instead of the normal sleep paralysis. I also believe there is some relation to night terror phenomenon, which I experienced as a child and which the salvia experience reminds me of.

  7. Chris,
What do you mean about a relationship to the experience of Salvia with night terrors? In a general sense or in a “oh hell I’m having a bad trip” sense?
I’m not even sure I know what night terrors are exactly - It’s not a nightmare but similiar, right?

  8. Night terrors - not always an accurate term, but it’s based on the fact that most people who have them look like they are having a terrifying experience, although there usually isn’t any memory of the event. It occurs at a deeper level than dream sleep and is more related to sleep walking or sleep talking.

For some reason I vaguely remember the ones I had as a child. It usually involved some abstract concept or feeling that was too overwhelming and hard to describe. Imagine a boulder the size of a building balancing on the tip of a pin. Or sweeping a room using the tip of a pin. Sometimes there would be the sense of my body having tremendous mass. It’s the abstractness of it that seems similar to my salvia trips.

  9. Salvia is what the Shamans use to enlighten the confused thought waves
basically to help you think of the BIG picture of your goals in life as opposed to dwelling on the small stuff…
If you are around a bunch of people …. with no focus capabilities

Your trip will become mishmash / a little of your thoughts and affected by anything ….. the others might say…
The average time of enlightenment is 5-10 minutes…

It’s best to just use it alone, no alcohol, no weed, no drugs.
    My plants are growing well……..
