Oxycodone and Drug Tests

This page discusses oxycodone and drug tests. This includes questions and answers about how long oxycodone stays in urine, if it shows up on standard drug tests, how long it’s detectable via different testing methods (hair, saliva, urine), and more.

Also called: Percocet, Percodan, OxyContin, Roxicodone.

Oxycodone Drug Test Basics

Drug Classification: Opiate
Detectable in Standard Urine Tests: No
Detectable in Other Urine Tests: Yes
Detection Rate in Urine: 3-4 Days
Included in OTC home drug testing kits: Sometimes
Source: Erowid.org

Let’s expand on each one of these points.

Opiates, Oxycodone and Drug Tests
Oxycodone is an opiate and if you look at just about test that’s designed to look for more than one drugs (such as a 6 Panel Drug Test,) it will include opiate.

Most testing companies include opiates as standard fare for drug tests do so in an effort to detect more well known opiates such as heroin and codeine. The tests were designed specifically to look for the trail of evidence from these two drugs, which means detecting morphine metabolites in the urine.

In the case of oxycodone, however, when it breaks down into morphine, it’s in a very small amount that often remain undetected either by the first test or the second test (more on this later.)

Standard Tests Versus More Extensive / Expensive Tests
Or – EMIT Urine Tests VS GC MS Drug Testing

A standard urine test is usually an immunoassay drug test, specifically an EMIT test. They are relatively cheap and can be thought of as a kind of “front line” for conducting massive drug tests. When a company, be it in the private sector or something like probation alcohol testing conducted by the state, needs to drug test people, and lots of them, the tests are usually immunoassay EMIT tests. Because of the high error rate of false positives when it comes to the EMIT, when results come back positive for a drug the sample is typically double checked using a more precise – and expensive method – called “gas chromatography mass spectrometry,” AKA a gc ms drug test.

So what does all of this have to do with oxycodone drug tests?

This is where it gets tricky and unfortunately stressful for many people taking the test trying to understand what will happen.

For kids taking a urine drug test given to them by their parents, if the packaging includes opiates but doesn’t specifically mention oxycodone, then the test is unreliable as far as noting oxycodone and it may or may not detect it. But, if it’s a product that specifically looks for prescription opiates, which are available as home drug tests, then it will be able to detect oxcodone.

For adults taking drug tests for a job or for probation, taking a standard urine test, again, could flag a positive result for oxycodone. However – and this is the tricky part – as mentioned above, typically when a urine test shows a positive result for a drug, a second test via GC/MS is done to check it. Ironically, these tests often don’t look for oxycodone, only heroin and codeine, and so they will not find oxycodone, and a person who failed the urine test will often pass the overriding GC MS test.

Note: My source on this is here from Erowid. That information is from 2002. If anyone has any updates information or experience related to this point, please clarify in the comments.

Oxycodone Drug Test Detection Rates

What’s the cut off level for Oxycodone in a drug test?

It depends on the product or the lab and ranges anywhere 100 ng/ml to 300 ng/ml. For example, Quest Diagnostics has a test specifically designed for detecting oxycodone with a cut off level of 100 ng/ml.

How long does oxycodone stay in urine?

About 3-4 days.

Thinking of pulling the ol’ niacin flush drug test trick? Here’s some things to think about.

Overdosing on niacin is a real possibility here.

We all get a good laugh from headlines like “Morons Overdose on Niacin While Trying to Beat a Drug Test” (thank you Wired), but the point is that you really can overdose trying to flush your system with large amounts of niacin, AKA vitmin B3.

A niacin overdose will fuck you up.

Here’s a quote from someone advocating a niacin flush:

“When your skin starts to burn like hell, that means its working.”

That is truly scary advice. It also means your overdosing and your body is saying “What the hell have you done to me?”

Symptoms of a niacin overdose or niacin poisoning include:

burning sensation

rash

itchiness

liver failure

heart palpitations

vomiting

blurred vision

blindness

There’s no scientific evidence it works.

There’s no research or studies to back up this claim. It’s all anecdotal. Supposedly the idea started with a book published by – get this – L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology – who promoted the idea of taking niacin as part of a personal detox program to clean out the body. This suggested that niacin will remove drugs from the body, and thus the idea of a niacin flush that spread around the underground as a way to pass drug tests. At least that’s one theory as to where this idea came from. Fast forward to the present and people say it works by removing THC from fat and that niacin speeds up your metabolism, thus breaking down THC faster and removing it from the body.

What about people who said it worked for them?

There seems to be cases where people took niacin and then passed a marijuana drug test (along with others saying it did NOT work for them). If you look at a lot drug forums you can’t deny finding these threads. But it’s rare to find someone who did nothing other than take niacin and it’s impossible to say what it was that led to the test results. Usually people also stop using marijuana as soon as they find out a test is coming, drink enormous amounts of water, drink vinegar, urinate as much as possible, and exercise a lot with the idea of sweating out the unwanted toxins from their system. Could it be the combination of a couple days of sobriety plus everything else worked for them? Yes, definitely a possiblity. Could it be that they just got lucky? Maybe. But it’s impossible to say and considering the risks with overdosing on niacin, not to mention how easy it is to buy GNC products to pass a drug test, doing a niacin flush is crazy.

And finally…

Even Erowid says it doesn’t work.

Erowid, the godfather of all non biased drug information on the internet, even says “there is no evidence at all that this works.”
Read it on Erowid here.

What is a Hair Follicle Test and how do they work?

It’s a drug test that uses a sample of a persons hair to test for drugs.

Note: It’s actually inaccurate to use the term “hair follicle test, as the test does not test the follicle but rather the strand. But many people and even companies use the term hair follicle test so that’s what we’ll call it in this guide.

How Does a Hair Test Work?

First, a Hair Sample Is Taken…
The test requires a sample of hair about an inch and half long (3-5 cm) and about as thick as something between a shoe tip and a pencil. (FYI there is no such thing as a test that can use a single hair.) This sample must taken from the root end near the scalp i.e. being the most “fresh” hair available. A sample from the tips or end of the hair would skew the results.

…Then Tested for Drugs.
Drug use leaves a record in a persons hair with the presence of something called “drug metabolites.” These metabolites are produced by the body in response to the presence of the drug in the system and get deposited in something called the papilla, which will eventually generate the hair strand.

A hair test looks at the sample of hair as a small piece of a history, somewhat like looking at the rings of a tree stump. The beginning of the hair sample (what was closest to the scalp) corresponds to the most recent time period. Then moving back through the end of the sample is like traveling back in time. An inch and half (3-5cm) of hair let a lab look at roughly 90 days of history.

What Drugs Can a Hair Test Detect?

The “standard” test is for 5 substances, which are:

Cannabinoids (marijuana, hash)

Cocaine (cocaine, crack, benzoylecognine)

Amphetamines (amphetamines, methamphetamines, speed)

Opiates (heroin, opium, codeine, morphine)

Phencyclidine (PCP)

Other drugs might be tested for as well, including:

Ecstasy/MDMA

Barbiturates

It is rare (impossible?) for facilities to detect LSD and psilocybin use via hair testing. (If you know more about this, please comment.)

How Far Back Can They Detect Drugs?

The standard is 90 days. This means any substance used in the past 90 days will be detected – including one time use.

Note that the technology does exist to look back 6 months and even a year, but this type of in depth analysis is not common. One reason is that tests that go back that far or further require ever longer strands of hair for a sample – a requirement that is not very practical for standardized test requirements considering not everyone has long hair. As mentioned, the sample used is usually about 1.5 inches, which roughly translates into a 90 day window into the past.

Who Uses Hair Follicle Test?

Note: while this guide is aimed at a global audience, some of the following information applies specifically to the United States.

The United States Military.
The military is often thought of as using hair tests, but my research brings up urinanalysis drug testing. For instance, this article here from About.com states that the DOD processes 60k urine tests every month for military members. The word “hair” is not mentioned even once.

If you know anything about military tests uses hair analysis, please comment.

Private Companies
Private companies are definitely the biggest user of hair follicle testing.

Commercial Class Drivers
In the United States there’s something called The SAMHSA-5. SAMSA stands for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the SAMHSA-5 is a reference to the 5 classes of drugs that a drug test is required for in regards to employeees who will use a Commercial Class Drivers License as part of their job.

In other words, anyone with a Commercial Class Drivers License for their job will be tested for these 5 drugs by Federal Law. Because of this, virtually all testing labs offer a test for these same 5 drugs. It’s become such a standard than even at home hair testing kits offer the same in their “5 Panel” kits.

These 5 drugs categories:

Cannabinoids (marijuana, hash)

Cocaine (cocaine, crack, benzoylecognine)

Amphetamines (amphetamines, methamphetamines, speed)

Opiates (heroin, opium, codeine, morphine)

Phencyclidine (PCP)

Companies complying with the SAMHSA-5 requirements are not required to use any specific type of test. It is believed that a urine test, being the cheapest method, is the most common but a hair analysis is also possible. If you know this to be ncorrect, please contact us or comment on this article with the details.

How Can I Pass My Drug Test?

There is no clear answer to this question, but if there was, it would be that you need to be clean to pass.

According to Erowid, probably the most reliable source in the world when it comes to all things drugs related, cleansing shampoos designed to help you pass a hair drug test are simply not reliable at removing drug metabolites from the hair (Source). Since drug metabolites are the basis for how testing facilities determine a positive or negative result for a substance, this means those products don’t work.

What about Zydot Shampoo?

Here is a guide to zydot shampoo. People who have used Zydot Shampoo are encouraged to comment with their experiences. It appears to not be reliable, and any kind of Zydot Shampoo review or tidbit of information from your experiences would be very helpful.

According to “online chatter” on forums and whatnot, this might be the best product available for passing a hair drug test. However, it’s hard to seperate marketing hype and the truth on whether or not it works. People who have used Toxin Wash are encouraged to comment here with their experiences. Any kind of snippet or Toxin Wash review based on your experience would be very helpful.

Where Can I Buy a Hair Follicle Test To Do A Test At Home?

Oh you clever bugger!

Click here to buy or read reviews of the Hair Confirm hair test.

This is the test used by Craig Medical, who have conducted 1.5 million hair tests. (Source)

Interesting, as far as I can tell it looks like the tests you can buy for “at home use” are the same tests that official labs are using. The at home tests are made primarily for parents who want to drug test their children. But this also means that people can buy these at home tests and test themselves before taking their official hair test. In this way you might be able to prepare for a test and be reasonably confident about passing or failing it.

Introducing the Turnera Diffusa Plant

Damiana tea comes from the “turnera diffusa plant”, a small shrub that grows tasty fig-like fruits, native to the southwestern US, Mexico, and Central America, among other places.

From the leaves of the shrub you can make damiana teas and damiana incense, as well as extracts and oils. Interesting, it’s presently an ingredient in traditional Mexican liquors, and was supposedly how margaritas were originally made.

Damania Tea and Relaxation

Damiana tea has long been known for its relaxing effects. Currently there is little research into the precise mechanisms or chemicals responsible for this effect, but something called “damianin” (which, admittedly, sounds like someone just made it up on the spot while doing their research) is supposed to be responsible for the relaxing effects on the central nervous system that damiana is known for.

Damiana Tea and Sex

Beyond its reputation for its pleasant, relaxing effects when drank as a tea, the most famous thing about damiana is it’s status as an aphrodisiac.

Amazingly, damiana actually seems to be the real deal when it comes to its status as sex enhancer and libido stimulator. At least in animal models, and don’t we all fuck like rats, really?

Animal testing ethics aside, two studies in the late 1990′s published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology show some interesting data on damiana and sex. In a nutshell, rats that were either impotent and rats that just came and shouldn’t be able to get it up so quickly again – it’s hard to interpret the scientific jargon exactly, but I believe that’s what they’re saying! – were both able to get back into the swing of things and have sex again, quickly, when exposed to damiana.

What about the female rats you might ask? The same studies also showed it led to “increased sexual activity” among for the lady rats too.

So at least we know if you’re a rat you will be getting it on with some damiana.

Can we extrapolate the results to humans?

That can be dangerous when it comes to animal models in general, but considering that the only reason the tests were done is because people already claimed damiana had these effects on them is pretty good evidence (to me anyway) that there’s something to be said for damiana and sex.

Now who would’ve thought a plant native to Texas could be so naughty?

Damiana Tea and Lucid Dreaming

I’ve noticed that damiana is often an ingredient in “herbal dream blends”, and mainly attributed this to the fact it’s smokable and has a pleasant taste, it’s relaxing, and it’s popular amongst people who “into this kind of stuff.”

But does it actually have an effect on lucid dreams or dreams in general?

I’m skeptical, as always, but there might be something to it – in fact, after doing all the research for this article I’m starting to think there really is something to damiana and dreams.

Erowid published an interesting Experience Report called The Sensuous Curve of Awakened Dreams claiming damiana has the ability to potentiate vivid, erotic, and lucid dreams. The writer had been practicing several lucid dreaming techniques and then one night, after both smoking and drinking damiana tea, had a series of lucid dreams and erotic dreams.

I also found a couple conversations online like this one where people report success smoking damiana for dream work.

The authors at DreamHerbs.com (side note: is the author the founder of I Am Shaman?) also discuss using damiana in this context. In describing their own experience, the writer says he drinks a cup of damiana tea just before bed and also smokes a bit of it too, which “almost always is…followed by distinct and vivid lucidity within the following dream states,” with a “distinctly erotic overtone.”

Very interesting indeed and something I’d like to experiment with and blog about.

Damiana Vs the State of Louisiana

In an act of overreaching stupidity, in 2010 the state of Louisiana passed a law that made damiana illegal. Those patient enough to sift through legal jargon can read the bill here, but in effect, House Bill NO. 173 outlawed damiana along with a bazillion other plants that they were worried could corrupt the youth of America. Specifically for damiana, this meant that its leaves, stems, seeds, and resin were now illegal, banning not just the tea but any kind of mixture, preparation, anything to do with it.

In the same section and elsewhere in the bill, it also outlawed Mugwort, Sacred Lotus, Blue Lotus, Salvia Divonoru, Skullcap, and synthetic canniboids. You might notice 2 particularly interesting things there – Salvia and synthetic canniboids, aka “Spice.”

Yep, Damiana got screwed because of all the media attention on Salvia and Spice.

I know this is old news but it still makes me mad. At least for now this is only true for Louisiana and nowhere else.

One unfortunate side effect is that many herbal companies like I Am Shaman completely stopped shipping anything to anyone in the state. Eish.

This Is Your Brain on Drugs.. Any Questions?

Let’s start with the classics. Here something you might remember if you’re 30 and up.

And yes, dear egg chef, actually I do have a question.

“Does marijuana really kill brain cells?”

OH – questions like these bring me to back to my childhood.

I’m in elementary school. We had police officers come in and talk about drugs. It was called the DARE program – a clever acronym which stood for Drug Abuse, Resistance, Education. I honestly don’t remember too much about the actual class other than teasing the officer about gangster rap and asking him if he listened to NWA. (Yes, in retrospect, quite ballsy for a 4th grader. I’m probably more scared of cops now at age 30.) But I feel like that’s the kind of quaint easily remembered tidbits kids walk away with from a class like DARE.

It also brings up a vague memory of my stoned brother telling me – in all seriousness – that yes, smoking weed kills brain cells but do you know how many brain cells we have? Like a million. So it doesn’t make any difference. I nodded and left it like that. What did I care? I was in 6th grade and weed was just something Dr. Dre and Cypress Hill rapped about, as obscure to me as gang bangin’ and hustlin’ on the streets.

It’s funny now to see this question creep back up online. You can find people asking on drug forums and Yahoo Answers. So let’s see if we can possibly settle the question once and for.

First, let’s make sure we even know what we’re talking about though. If people are going to say pot destroys brain cells, let’s look at just what a brain cell is in the first.

Treatment Options: Suboxone

Treatment for pain pill addiction often involves being prescribed a drug called buprenorphine, also known as Suboxone.

A typical look at how treatment works with suboxone looks like this:

In the beginning withdrawal stages, a patient meets with a doctor who will give him or her suboxone.

At this time, the suboxone will bind to the receptors in the brain that previously would have been binded with the pain killer being used.

Traditional counseling is typically included during the time of treatment as well.

Over the next few weeks, the doctor will monitor your progress, health, and how you feel. Dosage will be adjusted accordingly.

At the discretion of your doctor, he or she will then taper your dosage so that eventually you are not taking suboxone and you are free of opoid dependence.

Suboxone Side Effects

Note that while suboxone, a patient may experience the following side effects:

Body Chills

Constipation / Diarrhea

Dizziness

Drowsiness / Trouble Sleeping

Stomach Pain / Nausea

Headaches

Flushing / Redness

Sweating

Vomiting

Burning

Numbnesss

Mouth / Tongue Tingles

General Pain / Weakness

Getting Help and Treatment

Getting off pain killers is going to require going to a doctor and seeking professional drug treatment. Going at it alone is likely to only perpetuate the problem and result in relapse. If you feel you are dealing with a pain pill addiction problem, realistically you will need to work with a drug addiction treatment program.

Believe it or not, there is a small niche industry built around supplying people with fake, sythentic urine in order to pass a drug test pull a funny prank.

Wait…pull a prank or scam your drug test? Which is it?

See here’s on the deal on that:

Technically it’s all bought and sold as a novelty item. Maybe this is true if you realize that indeed, it is pretty damn novel of you to replace your tainted pee with some clean fake pee and fool everyone. Horrifically, it is also sold for fetish purposes. I’ll let you think about that for a second. Ew.

Side Note: Can you imagine being the guy who owns this business? I wonder what his business card says. I also wouldn’t mind knowing if he needs a business partner.

In this blog post, we look at just what the heck this fake urine stuff is all about, how it works, if it works, and what you should know about it whether you’re a concerned parent or a targeted employee facing a test you really don’t want to fail.

Fake Urine – For Real?

As gross as it sounds, yes… it’s real.

Really fake, that is.

And I’ve heard a rumor that indeed, people have bought it, broken their promise to only use it as a novelty item, and switched it out with their urine in order to pass a drug test.

How widespread is it? No one knows but here’s an interesting article about a lab running tests for construction workers in which about 5% of samples submitted ended up being synthetic. Another facility reporting a range of 1% to 2.5% of samples being fake. Another facility reporting on samples from individuals on probation, the number jumps considerably higher. Something in the range of 20-30% showed evidence of manipulation, whether through synthetic means or something like the QCarbo 32 Detox Drinks.

It’s kind of a catch-22 though on how common is it though. Obviously these labs aren’t able to include all the thousands of samples that they don’t realize are fake.

For those that did though, how odd it must have been as a lab worker to figure out not only were there no drugs but also no urine in the urine samples?

What Is It?

That’s a good question. Of course the companies selling it don’t spell it all out, that’d be like Coke giving away their secret recipe.

But, if you were going to replicate things the right way, the ingredients would look something like this:

water, salts, proteins, metabolites, and hormones.

Also, the pH balance of real urine goes between 4.4 to 8, with 7 being neutral.

However these products are made, they must be finding a way to replicate the chemical analysis and standard pH balance range – or at least, replicate whichever of these componenents are used as a baseline to determine if the sample is, in fact, actual human urine.

Along with this, fresh urine coming from the body is going to be around 98.6 degrees (F). This means not only do you have to get the composition right, the pH right, the color right, but you also have to get the temperature right.

And, finally, once you’ve figured all that, the person taking the test has to smuggle it in, keep it at the right temperature, and submit is as their real urine without anyone noticing. Fun stuff. But evidently, not too hard to pull off.

(If you’re taking a military or government test though, you’re outta luck: supposedly they watch. Military folks is this true?)

Fake Urine Brands

Where to Buy Fake Urine

Head shops and even wholesome stores like GNC often stock these products. (See GNC Products to Pass a Drug Test. And of course the internet offers an endless variety of vendors pushing their own brand.

Speaking of which, here’s an incomplete list of synthetic urine products:

Whizinator Whiz Kit

QuickFix Synthetic Urine

Dr. Green’s Agent X

Dr. John’s Famous Pee Pee

Clean Stream Urine Kit

Most are sold already in liquid form but some are sold as a powder that you mix up and turn into a liquid.

Supposedly there are way brands more than this? If you know of one, feel free to add it via the comments.

Temperature. Getting the temperature right is huge. If a sample is submitted but the temperate is out of range, the testing facility will obviously see this as a sign of an adulterated sample. You will fail & you will have to re-take the test. Worse yet, in some cases this can be reported to your employer, counselor, parents, etc – whoever is in charge of running the test – that your sample appears to be manipulated / tampered / messed with and you will be in a deep doo-doo.

So how are people getting around this?

Most of the time it just means following the directions that came with the product. They know temperature is critical and so they have a plan for how to keep things just right.

Tip: Most of the time you get a temperature gauge, it’s like a thermoeter, quite similar in function to the one I have to look at when my roommate leaves and I monitor his fish tank. Pay attention to this strip.

Tip: Lots of people talk about hiding it close it your body. Like in your arm pit or your crotch.

How Much Does Fake Urine Cost?

Between $20 and $30. Something like the Whizzinator costs more because it’s a whole kit that attaches to your body to deal with the concealment problem. It’s about twice as much as just the fake sample.

Does It Work?

Yes. And that’s why it’s so controversial.

Granted, for hardcore testing facilities and situations (military, government, etc), it’s unlikely passing off some synthetic stuff is going to work. The tests are simply too stringent. Plus they watch you while you pee.

But for everyone else, you can read forums online and see that it consistently works so long as you follow the instructions.

And if you can’t do that, maybe you don’t deserve to pass your drug test.

The Panel Discussion is a new feature I would like to do every month.

The idea is to throw out an interesting question to a group of people (some of the most interesting and intelligent people I know) and post the response for everyone to see.

The question is then open to everyone reading the blog, who can respond with a comment for all to see.

Thanks to Hatter and Chad for taking part in this months discussion. Anyone reading this who loves to talk about this kind of stuff and would like to be featured in next months post, email me!

Here’s the question I presented to them and now to you:

The idea of a magic pill or substance that is highly successful in inducing lucid dreams is a popular thought in the lucid dreaming community. One only needs to look at lucid dream forums to find discussions of this type constantly creeping up, as people ask about the same substances over and over – like Vitamin B6 and Calea Zacatechichi, hoping to find something that works for them.

Despite some success reported with these substances for inducing vivid dreams, increasing dream recall, and even inducing lucid dreams, it seems we are a long way off from something that is reliable at producing lucid dreams with the pop of a pill.

However, as advances in neuroscience and medicine are continually applied for less-than-medicinal reasons (smart drugs / nootropics), do you think a real lucid dreaming pill is an inevitable development?

Does that thought immediately excite you or actually disgust you?

Furthermore, do you think certain psychoactive substances (DMT, for example) could already said to be a lucid dreaming “pill”?

Mad Hatter (from Dreaming to Infinity blog) Responds:

I think that question’s answer really depends on what you believe lucid dreaming to be. If you consider it to be completely contained within the brain, then I’d say yes, it’s inevitable that science will figure out the formula to trigger whatever needs to be triggered. If you believe that dreaming comes from somewhere else, and that the brain is merely the receiver or the tuning instrument, then perhaps science won’t quite ever be able to get it right. Right now I’m uncertain which I believe, but my bet would be that science figures out some method for accomplishing it.

Does that thought immediately excite you or actually disgust you? Why?

A little of both, honestly. I think dreaming holds so much potential that everybody should be able to experience it and utilize it in their life. However, I believe the value is also lessened if you don’t have to work for it or learn to control it. You lose something when you take away the path to becoming lucid and just get the end result.

Furthermore, do you think certain psychoactive substances (DMT, for example) could already said to be a lucid dreaming “pill”?

I’m unsure. Having not tried any of these substances I don’t really have the experience necessary to really make that call. I would say that I believe these substances might be useful for the same type of uses as dreaming, but I’m not sure the end result is the same.

Chad Responds:

Let me start by saying that I am by no means an expert on dreaming drugs. In all my years of lucid dreaming research I have not employed the standard oneirogens such as Vitamin B6 and others. The chemical research I have done has been with the dreaming possibilities of hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD, Psylocibin, and DXM. I have avoided other, more standard drugs due to skepticism. Conflicting reports seem to show that a lucidity inducing drug is still far away. I also tend to think the placebo effect is responsible for a great deal of success reports with these drugs.

I would be among the first to purchase such a lucidity-inducing drug if it were ever to be perfected. Some see chemically induced experiences as being unnatural or not as meaningful as experiences that occur ‘naturally’, but I am not one of them. I firmly believe that science has given and will continue to give the psychonaut a powerful arsenal for self-exploration.

I do not think that substances, such as DMT, can be considered authentic lucidity inducing drugs. Such drugs are no doubt a powerful means to inducing visionary experiences but not necesarily the experience we call lucid dreams. I have observed, and often remarked upon, the similarity between psychedelic experiences and the lucid dream, and I believe the two to be closely related. It has been one of my experimentation goals to explore this relationship further. Below I list two experiments that I have performed and may be repeated by the interested explorer. I have achieved great results with both experiments. They can be repeated and different results gained each time. The prerequisites for the experiments vary but are mostly concerned with prior psychedelic and lucid experiences.

Experiment 1 (Down The Rabbit Hole)

1. Set up lucidity. Practice lucidity induction method of choice. Remind yourself to do the drug experiment once lucid.
2. Upon attaining lucidity, create/find a pill that ‘contains’ LSD or a similar drug
3. Take the pill
4. Keep a close eye on mind/dream interaction – how the two influence each other during the experiment
5. If you want to get more in depth, try creating your idea of a perfect atmosphere in which to conduct the experiment before taking the pill.
6. Try to remain focused on lucidity. This might become difficult as the dream/psychedelic experience strengthens, especially as tripping often raises the question as to whether one is dreaming or not.
7. As always, record results. If you’ve never taken hallucinogens, what was the experience like? If you have taken hallucinogens before, did your dream experience simulate your waking experience? To what degree?

Experiment 2 (Lucid Brainwash)

1. Obtain an audio format lucid induction program. You can use a self-hypnosis CD or make a tape yourself. For my version of this experiment I used a 30 minute lucidity-trance induction tape I got from the Lucidity Institute.
2. Set up your room / area where you are going to be taking your trip. Make sure the CD or tape is ready to go, sound level ok, something comfy to lay on while listening, etc.
3. Ingest goodly amount of hallucinogen of your choice.
4. Wait until the drug starts having a strong effect – then lay down comfortably and start the audio program. This is best done in the dark or in very dim lighting.
5. Put the CD on repeat or make sure to rewind the tape. Listen to this, while relaxed, as many times as you can make yourself do so. Just relax. Don’t try to do anything. You’re just letting your brain soak up the instructions.

Good luck and good dreaming! If you decide to try either of these experiments I would love to hear about your results. You can reach me at my MySpace page: www.myspace.com/oneironaught

What do you think about the idea of a lucid dreaming? Will it ever happen? Is it inherently a flawed idea? Where does DMT fit into all this, if at all? I would like to open this discussion up to all my readers. What do you think?
