I found this post very interesting. I too have noticed that dream characters seem to have their own way about doing things and also have a hard time in understanding that they are dream characters when I tell them what they are. In another instances though I have noticed another kind of dream character where they express no knowledge of anything and seem to just be filling the space, much like something out of a computer game. They seem programed to run an expected way and when asked why they are doing what they are doing, they have no idea. The dream characters that seem to know more about the dream world than I do, seem to try to interfere with the control of the dream world. This is the reported case in many people I have spoken with that have experienced lucid dreaming.

The problem with thinking that we are controlling the dream environment is that we don't seem to get to experience this environment consciously very often (at least the majority of us) and so when we try to influence the environment we might not get the reaction from the dream characters that we wanted, much like going to another country and with out any experience trying to change their views.

I know it sounds odd to think of our dream characters as being a living thinking entity, but if our subconsciousness is controlling their actions then they could possibility be exactly that. Our body being the host of a more complex network of entities than we could possibly understand. Its either that or pseudoscience wins this round in stating that their are such things as beings that we communicate from other realities in the housing of our minds. You be the judge.
